Which Shinco unit fits your room?

Move the slider to the size of your room. The list shows the units rated for at least that many square feet, smallest first, so you do not pay for cooling you will never use.

Square feet are the brand's own room ratings. A sunny room, a high ceiling or a kitchen next door calls for the next size up.

    In the room

Shinco at work, from studio to sofa

A portable air conditioner rolls from the studio into a bright room, an SPF1 keeps a home office cool beside the desk, and a compact dehumidifier runs between the sofa and the wardrobe.

    Where it works

Shinco at home: four rooms, four jobs

    • A bedroom on a hot night

The SPF2 at 8,000 BTU cools a bedroom up to 350 square feet, and its sleep step lifts the set point 1.8°F every two hours so you wake up neither hot nor chilled.

      The SPF2
    • A home office in July

A desk by the window takes the afternoon sun. The 12,000 BTU SPF1 holds a room up to 450 square feet, from the panel or, in the Wi-Fi version, from your phone.

      The SPF1
    • A damp living room or den

When the air feels heavy and the walls smell musty, an SDZ1 dehumidifier holds the room where you set it, from 30 to 80% in 5% steps.

      The SDZ1-120P
    • Closets and laundry days

Continuous mode keeps a small dehumidifier running while clothes dry indoors, and the SDL-30P fits on a closet floor at 16.34 inches tall.

    Two ratings, both printed

Shinco dehumidifiers by the brand test and the federal test

The brand figure is measured in hot, wet air, the federal figure at 65°F, the air of a basement. Compare dehumidifiers on the federal one: every certified unit is measured that way. Read both columns before you pick a size: the federal figure is the one that matches a cool basement, and every row is a unit of the Shinco air-care line.

    Before you buy

Six checks before you order a Shinco unit

    1. 1

      Measure the floor

Length times width gives square feet. A 12 by 15 foot bedroom is 180 square feet, while an open living room with a kitchen counts as one space.

    2. 2

      Add for sun and people

A room facing west, a top floor or a room where four people watch a game holds more heat. Take the next size up.

    3. 3

      Check the window

Every Shinco portable AC ships with a kit for sliding windows. A crank or tilting window needs the seal for casement windows.

    4. 4

      Find the outlet

The unit plugs straight into a wall outlet within reach of its cord. Extension cords and power strips are not for air conditioners.

    5. 5

      Read the damp

A musty room needs fewer pints than one with sweating walls. ENERGY STAR sizes a dehumidifier by how damp the space is as well as its size.

    6. 6

      Plan the water

A bucket fits a closet or a bathroom. A basement unit runs best with a hose to a floor drain, or a pump when the drain sits higher.

    About the brand

Shinco has sold portable cooling and drying in the US since 2018

Shinco portable air conditioners and dehumidifiers go into the rooms central air misses and the basements that stay damp all summer: a bedroom under the roof, a home office in July, a basement in August.

You get two numbers on every unit of the Shinco catalog, held to the Shinco standard: the figure on its box and the federal figure beside it. More about Shinco.

    • 8years of Shinco in the US, since 2018
    • 14units in the catalog today

    Questions

Shinco air conditioners and dehumidifiers: your questions

Which Shinco portable air conditioner do you need for your room?

Match the square feet: the 8,000 BTU SPF2 for up to 350, the 10,000 BTU SPF2 for up to 400, the 12,000 BTU SPF1 or SPF2 for up to 450, the 14,000 BTU SPU2 for up to 700. The room size finder does it for you.

Why does your Shinco air conditioner show two BTU numbers?

The larger is the ASHRAE rating, and the smaller is the DOE seasonally adjusted rating, measured at 83°F and 95°F outdoors with the warm air the unit draws into the room counted. We print both on every unit.

Which Shinco dehumidifier fits your basement?

A basement up to 5,000 square feet takes the 80 or 86 pint units. A space of 6,000 or 7,000 square feet takes the SDZ1-120P or SDZ1-150P. All of them drain through a hose so you do not carry a bucket upstairs.

Can you plug a Shinco portable AC into an extension cord?

No. Plug it directly into a wall outlet: major appliances should never run through an extension cord or a power strip.

Where can you buy Shinco air conditioners and dehumidifiers?

Every buy button on this site opens the unit at our retail partner, where you check out, choose delivery and handle returns.

Will the Shinco window kit fit your crank window?

The kit in the box fits sliding windows. For a casement, crank or tilting window, use the Shinco window seal, which closes around the hose with a zipper.

Four public sources stand behind our figures: how DOE rates a portable air conditioner, how dehumidifiers are tested, what humidity the EPA advises and how heavy appliances should be plugged in.
