About the Shinco SPF2 Portable Air Conditioner

The SPF2 is the unit you roll into a bedroom in June and back into a closet in September. Pick 8,000 BTU for a room up to 350 square feet, 10,000 BTU for one up to 400, or 12,000 BTU for one up to 450. The 8,000 BTU body is the small one at 26.93 inches tall. The 10,000 and 12,000 BTU bodies stand 32.68 inches.

Each SPF2 cools, runs as a fan, or dries the air on its own Dry setting. In that mode the water it pulls out is evaporated through the exhaust hose instead of collecting in a bucket: we rate it at 19.2 liters a day on the 8,000 BTU unit, 36 on the 10,000 and 43.2 on the 12,000. You set 60 to 86°F from the panel or from the remote, which works up to 23 feet away.

Setup takes the 59-inch telescopic hose and the window kit in the box, no tools. The kit is made for sliding windows. For a crank window, see our seal for casement windows. The 24-hour timer turns the unit on before you get home, and its sleep step lifts the set point by 1.8°F every two hours so the room does not overcool at night.

Questions

Shinco SPF2 Portable Air Conditioner: questions

Which SPF2 do you need for a 12 by 14 foot bedroom?

That room is 168 square feet, well inside the 350 square feet we rate the 8,000 BTU SPF2 for. A sunny room on a top floor or a room you share with a home office gains heat faster, and there the 10,000 BTU unit gives you headroom.

Do you have to empty a bucket on the SPF2?

Not in normal cooling: the unit evaporates the water it collects and sends it out with the hot air through the exhaust hose.

What is the difference between the two BTU numbers on the SPF2?

The larger number is the ASHRAE rating (8,000, 10,000 or 12,000 BTU). The smaller one is the DOE seasonally adjusted rating (4,550, 6,450 or 7,800 BTU), measured at 83°F and 95°F outdoors with the warm air the unit draws into the room counted. Our BTU guide explains both.
