Where the facts come from

Cooling capacity, room sizes, pints per day, tank size, noise, dimensions and what comes in the box come from our own product descriptions. Federal test figures for dehumidifiers come from the ENERGY STAR certified-product data. Prices come from our scheduled catalog update.

Two numbers, both printed

A portable air conditioner carries two cooling numbers and a dehumidifier carries two capacity numbers. We print both and say which test each one comes from, so a unit is never made to look larger than the federal test says it is.

Public sources

Our guides lean on the EPA, ENERGY STAR, the Department of Energy and the Electrical Safety Foundation International. Every source is opened and read before a sentence cites it, and the date we read it is printed with the source.

Ratings and photos

The star rating and the number of ratings on a unit come from shoppers at our retail partner, as of our last update. Each product page has its own pool, and a pool is counted once.

Product photos and the film on our home page come from our own brand photography and video. Where a photo carried printed captions, arrows or a phone screen, we cut it or do not show it.
